Celebrating Our Missionary Sisters

“We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love…”
– 1 Thessalonians 1:203

Dear Friends,

On All Souls’ Day and during the month of November, Mass and prayers are offered at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in memory of our departed loved ones. I would like to specially remember four of our missionary Sisters who passed away this year who had deep love and compassion for those who are poor. The Mission Society has provided funding to all of these Sisters’ ministries throughout the years.

Sr. Julieta Maria de Carvlho (1/4/1960 – 3/4/2019 – Brazil) – I met Sr. Julieta when I visited Brazil in 2017. We traveled deep into the rural countryside to a small church so she and other Sisters and partners in ministry could teach catechism to the local children. We also visited several farm families who live without plumbing or electricity. She leaves an invaluable legacy of kindness, self-giving and understanding of life.

Sr. Cecile Ho On (3/25/1921 – 4/30/2019 – Jamaica) – For 58 years, Sr. Cecile taught young children at Chetwood Primary School in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She had a special kitchen where food was prepared for the hungry children. She also had a ministry at the backdoor of Mt. Alvernia Convent where she would give a hot drink and something to eat to anyone who came. When someone asked her what her secret was for never being upset, never discriminating and also finding time to pray, she said, “It’s all about LOVE. That’s my motto! I love my God, and I love my Church!”

Sr. Teresinha dos Santos (8/7/1929 – 8/22/2019 – Brazil) – I also met Sr. “Jacinta” when visiting Brazil. She was living on a farm to care for families who worked and lived in the area. She ministered to pre-teens and teenagers, teaching catechism and manual crafts. She was also a relentless fundraiser for the social welfare foundation of Santa Casa Hospital. She felt that in God’s eyes, there was no distinction of race, color or economic status. She believed all were equal and deserved the same dignity, care and love.

Sr. Patricia Perry (3/22/1937 – 4/11/2019 – USA) – Sr. Pat was a teacher and hospital administrator for 20 years until she had a deep desire of opening a home to serve the needs of the elderly in the greater Olean area. She lived and ministered at “Sr. Pat’s Home” from 1986 to 2018, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, taking people to medical appointments and more. Every resident was someone special in her eyes who deserved dignity.

Let us remember these missionary Sisters and all the souls of the departed on All Souls’ Day and throughout the month of November. We invite you to print out this form and place your loved ones’ names on it and return to us. All the remembrances will be placed on the altar this November.

The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany and all involved with the St. Elizabeth Mission Society thank God for you every day. You have helped our Sisters and their ministry partners minister to those who are poor in Jamaica, Brazil, Bolivia and the United States. As always, your gifts help further the work of our call to help our brothers and sisters in need.

Many blessings to you during this special time of remembrance,
Laura
